Kenai

Winter weather in Kenai is somewhat milder than that of other areas of Alaska. In January, the coldest month of the year, temperatures often drop below zero. In the remaining winter months, temperatures usually range from the 30s down to the single digits. Kenai residents see between four and 15 feet of snow each year.

In the winter months, recreation is centered on skiing, snowmobiling and ice skating. Warmer months bring hiking, canoeing, river rafting and other active outdoor opportunities to Kenai residents. Hiking and canoeing are popular at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge covers two million acres and is home to moose, bears, sheep, mountain goats, salmon and more. The landscape includes lowland forests, lakes, frozen mountain peaks and more than two hundred miles of trails and waterways, including the Kenai Canoe Trails. Guided canoe trips ranging from one day to one week are available through several local organizations. River rafting along the Kenai River is also a popular way to enjoy the natural plant and animal species of the region.

True adventure seekers visit the West Side of Cook Inlet. Thirty minutes away by wheel or float plane, this section of undeveloped wilderness is popular with photographers and wildlife enthusiasts. Situated between volcanic mountains and the tidal pools and marshes along the coastline, the West Side of Cook Inlet is both serene and rugged. Sport fishing is excellent, while tent camping, sea kayaking and bird watching are also popular.

Art and culture enthusiasts enjoy one of several Kenai facilities celebrating the work of local artists. The Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center maintains a variety of permanent and traveling exhibits – including those featuring Russian and Aleut cultures – and commercial fishing and mining industry displays. The center also provides guided walking tours of the old town area, and focuses on the main influences of Kenai’s development, including fish canneries, homesteading, oil and a diverse cultural background. Kenai is also home to a fine arts center, which provides studio space for local artists. The center hosts exhibitions, sales and workshops. Monthly exhibitions are also put on by the art department of Kenai Peninsula College.

Annual events include the Kenai River Festival and Quilting on the Kenai. The River Festival is held in June at Green Strip Park, and includes arts and crafts, foods and music. Activities are geared for all ages and provide a great opportunity for residents to get together and enjoy their city. Quilting on the Kenai is an exhibition held at Cook Inlet Academy. The exhibition features several judging categories and a fashion show.
